Let me know if there's any additional questions. |

| Get ready, Dreamwidth! |
[Sep. 24th, 2009|05:16 am] |
Thanks to the fact that LiveJournal has been sucking as of late -- I wrestled with the site for ten minutes to find a link I wanted, and fifteen minutes of work didn't get an entry posted -- my waffling's over. After I get some sleep, I'm disabling the crossposts I was doing with InsaneJournal and linking this to my LiveJournal. That means I'm going to be posting daily, and following my LJ won't be a requirement!
And now, sleep, and a hearty "fuck you" to LJ for pissing me off when I wanted to be in and out during a bout of insomnia.

| Chat! |
[Sep. 10th, 2009|04:44 pm] |
Okay, I did this for the finale, and even though the episode isn't even airing for another four-and-a-half hours, I thought it was time to post West Coast Chat!
What I said in May:
It's a chat for tonight's episode of Supernatural for West Coasters -- which means it's geared for people starting at 9 PM PST -- but anyone who has already watched the episode and don't spoil or people who don't care about spoilers are welcome, too.
That means no chatting about episode contents until after 9 pm PST. Obviously, that also means no "OMG THE END OF THE EPISODE" at 9:01 pm. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to talk about! There's still shenanigans going on in Twitter, and some of us (like me) will be watching The Vampire Diaries at eight. Come join the party!

| Guess! |
[Sep. 6th, 2009|02:43 pm] |
I posted this first on my LJ, but it occurred to me that I have friends here who don't use LJ, so I'll give you guys a crack as well!
spn_summergen has finished posting all the entries for this round! They'll be anonymous until tomorrow or Tuesday, so if anyone (not rahnekat) wants to try guessing which one's mine, feel free! I'll screen the comments on this entry, and if anyone guesses correctly, they win a drabble of their picking, even if there's multiple winners.
One clue: I wrote a fic, so none of the art or vids are mine.

| And now, for something different. |
[Jul. 31st, 2009|10:44 pm] |
I should do a digest, or post something relevant, but that would be so normal for me. Let's do something slightly less normal: link to a fic I posted today!
Stress Relief Uhura's having a hard time back at Starfleet Academy, and the sources of two of her problems are the only places she can find solutions. Star Trek (reboot); R (for sexy times); Uhura/Gaila and Uhura/Spock; 2500 words.
(I'm linking to it on Dreamwidth first because I wish I had more of a reason to use this place. Plus, I seem to have more fic interactions here when I'm not participating in fests anyway.)

| I don't want to spoil! I promise! |
[Jul. 22nd, 2009|12:16 am] |
So yes, I'm going to talk on here about exercise and link my LJ posts, but I also want to talk about fanfic from a writing perspective. I stopped doing it on my writing blog because it never felt quite right to me, but I'm not sure it's entirely right here, either. Maybe that's what my Dreamwidth is: the place for posts that wouldn't work anywhere else. The dumping ground, as it is.
I write a lot of fanfic to go with this show called Supernatural. You may have heard of it. (If you read fandomsecrets, then you've probably heard of all the wank.) Fanfic is probably the least of my involvement with the fandom, since I do post-episode discussions and meta-reading and so on, but I spend a lot of time on it.
One of my favorite things to do is to read spoilers. Seriously, the only thing that makes me happier is watching the actual episodes, and nothing else comes close. I'll look at any spoilers I can get; my only exception is major plot spoilers on the night a new episode airs. Sitting around and contemplating how the spoilers are going to play out is how I stay invested during hiatus periods (which makes the month or so before the show starts filming hellish).
There's only one problem with spoilers. Sometimes, when I'm writing fic, I'll start on something during hiatus to satisfy my urge for new material, and I'll write slow, so I'll very often not finish by the time spoilers have shown up. And I'll get so into the spoilers, whether I like them or not, that I'll want to change my stories to reflect said spoilers. Even worse, I'll forget what my original intentions were. Usually, I get so jumbled that I'll drop the story, either until the show begins airing again or completely.
And yes, this did happen recently. That's one of the reasons I haven't really posted any fic during the month of July. I know I could write and post fic with spoilers, especially if I label them correctly, but I'd rather write the story I originally intended.
(If I remember, I'm going to post a follow-up to this when the season starts so I can go into more specifics.)
Edit: This has nothing to do with the post above, but I changed the layout. (Go to gorgeousnerd to see how it looks.) I liked the previous layout a lot, but the italics were nearly impossible to read, and I had some issues with the comments, so it was time for a change.

| You've got a little smug on you. |
[Jul. 20th, 2009|09:43 am] |
Here's a new idea for my Dreamwidth: exercise. Various members of my family post online as a means to track their progress and keep motivated, so I guess it's worth attempting. I won't be surprised if it crashes and burns like everything else I attempt, but I'll try to stay positive (erm, after this paragraph).
I've been looking into yoga seriously. The potential benefits are exactly what I need: control over emotional and behavioral difficulties, less joint and muscle pain, better digestion, etc. A lot of yoga's benefits come from more than just flexibility through poses; yoga is surrounded by a culture that promotes a more productive lifestyle, which is probably the key to becoming healthier. I mean, I don't connect with a treadmill.
But here's the thing. I've been reading articles talking about how yoga directly results in better health, which is fine, but...they seem so holier-than-thou. Here's a quote from an article about yoga and dieting:
"The diet industry has set up millions of Americans to fail," Vandoske says. "Fortunately you can never fail in yoga, which emphasizes accepting your body as it is." I get the general sentiment -- yoga is about accepting yourself and thinking more positively -- but "you can never fail in yoga" just set my teeth on edge. Of course you can fail in yoga. It isn't a perfect entity that makes life better automatically. Yoga requires practice and diligence, and not everyone's going to get into it, whether because they're not really ready for any exercise or simply because it's not for them.
Of course, it isn't just yoga. My dad's been really into biking, and he's noticed something similar. There seems to be a pretty strong culture surrounding biking as well: here's one local website that promotes it. I've also learned through my grandaunt's blog that jogging is much the same (although I don't think she's smug about it in the slightest; I like her realistic tone).
My question: is the smug really necessary? Do people have to see themselves as better than the unfit in order to keep up with fitness? Maybe it's because the line between taking pride in accomplishments and lording over everyone is a thin one. I don't know, but if I do ever get into some kind of shape and I start being self-righteous, my friends are allowed to slap some sense into me.

Well, this needs to be done; I had to skip back twenty-five in order to see the last post included in the most recent digest. (There's also the fact that I did the last digest in June. :\) So get ready!
-Meme time! (locked)
-About the Last Vampire series. (locked)
He will be born in a city associated with lost angels, but it will be dark angels who force him and his mother to flee to the mirror in the sky, where shoes move without feet and the emerald circle is seen in the morning light. -'Female-friendly' sci-fi, my ass.
I am beyond pissed with all the people who keep saying that there's such a thing as "female-friendly programming". Even though I had no interest in seeing it, I would much rather see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen than My Sister's Keeper (or Iron Man than Sex in the City, like last year). -A couple friending meme links.
-"Privilege" is not a dirty word.
"Privilege" is a term used to talk about someone who is free from the difficulties that not having privilege entails. This means being less likely to be pulled over because of the color of your skin, attacked for dressing what society perceives to be the opposite of your biological gender, banned from marrying the partner of your choice, and mocked for having an impairment that affects your speech. "Privilege" means the absence of difficulties directed toward "different" members of society. ( And a whole lot more. ) |

| Test! |
[Jul. 13th, 2009|02:04 am] |
I'm doing a test of a new feature I implemented: a link footer. Those who follow these entries on IJ will see what I mean, since I'm disabling comments there to encourage comments on Dreamwidth. (Not that I get comments in either place, but whatever.) Anyone using LJ or LJ clones can use OpenID to comment for those without a DW account (but I have codes, so speak up if you want one).
In other news:
- I'll be doing a digest at some point. I still like doing them, but @gnfeeds pretty much eliminates the need for it for Twitter users. Plus, the Twitter automatically links from multiple sites, which saves me the trouble. Anyone who doesn't mind me dragging my feet a little will still see digests here for the foreseeable future, so no worries there.
- Posting meta on here isn't really working for me. My LJ just seems like the more appropriate place for it. I still need to figure out a use for my Dreamwidth besides backing up my fanfic on
firmament, though; it's driving me nuts to just have this sitting here, particularly when I like it so much. Suggestions are welcome.
- As far as fic goes, there should be at least one story this month, if I get off my bum and write. It probably won't be much, since I have a story due August 1st, but I'll try to finish something.

| Star Trek rewatch -- The Enemy Within |
[Jul. 3rd, 2009|10:36 am] |

For those of you who didn't see, I'm putting up the discussion post for such_heights rewatch this week, and others will be taking the next couple of weeks. I'm not going to be doing the screencaps/summary like the usual posts -- I will be doing my normal watch-along post when I have some time -- but here are some notes to get everyone started.
A transporter malfunction splits Captain Kirk into two people – one good and one evil, and neither capable of functioning well separately. [Memory Alpha]

| Digest. |
[Jun. 30th, 2009|06:55 pm] |
It's the end of June, so it's as good a time as any to do a digest. Remember: if anyone out there wants to keep up with all my journal posts, @gnfeeds is the place to go.
-About Michael Jackson.
I heard about MJ's demise just after I woke up, and I've been in a state of shock ever since. It's not because I had any particular fondness for him, although I've always enjoyed his music. It's just jarring when a pop culture icon who has been a part of my life for the entirety of it passes away. -Mudd's Women: The Watch-Along.
Another commercial break, and Kirk gives a log entry that amounts to "SCHWING". Spock shrugs in a way that implies a similar thought as the women leave Kirk's quarters. Kirk tells "Walsh" that he's undergoing legal action and kicks him out with a smirk of his own. We go to the bridge, where Spock is commanding, and Not Chekov (I don't remember his name) is swooning. Sulu snaps his fingers and tells him they're back on duty. Hmm, Sulu isn't affected by the women? I wonder why. -More Michael Jackson (locked).
So I can't say I've been a die-hard fan, but I am connecting with a part of my childhood that I was ignoring for a while. I just wish it hadn't been under these circumstances. -Fic posting.
I have nothing too interesting to talk about right now...what I will do is link a couple of fanfics that I posted. -Book roundup 2009 (61-70).
This isn't so much like my normal book roundups. I read a couple of different books, but eight out of ten of the books in this list were written by Jo Rowling. This marks the second time I've read the entirety of the Harry Potter series, and the first time I've done it knowing what happens in Deathly Hallows and after the publication of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. -True Blood 1x03: 'Scratches' (SPOILERS).
I got to see the episode yesterday, which was great, but we have to wait until a week from Sunday for another episode. Stupid hiatus. (And apparently, I forgot to write about last week's episode. Oops.) |

| Yay fic! |
[Jun. 29th, 2009|12:22 am] |
I've been posting fanfic again. I just did a post like this on cho_malfoy, but this is for the Dreamwidth links. And it's a little more helpful on here than it is on LJ, since I don't have anyone following firmament.
"Sunrise in Winter"; Twilight, R (violence, gore, language), featuring Bella/Edward, Jacob/Angela, and more. This is the first story that I've posted on Dreamwidth before I posted it on LJ. Don't you feel special? (And yes, I wrote more Twilight fic, and I'm mildly ashamed of it. But I put some work into it, so I figured it deserved a chance out in the world.)
"The Next Job on the List"; Supernatural, PG, featuring Sam and Dean. This was a birthday fic for my mom, who is so awesome that she not only accepts fanfic for her birthday, but actually gets more use out of it than a purchased gift. Yeah. |

| "Life isn't The Sims, for fuck's sake." |
[Jun. 23rd, 2009|06:11 am] |
I've been trying to write a couple of meta topics that I've found in metafandom, but I've stopped for a variety of reasons. The fragments of posts are still saved, so I might come back to them later, but I'm going to move on for now.
(I do highly recommend impertinence's essay on trigger warnings, though. The essay itself should be warned for triggering sexual abuse, too; I don't get triggered in that way and it was still very hard to read, but worth it.)
What I'm currently interested is the place of fanfic in fandom. In a post discussing trigger warnings, amadi makes the following statement:
I don't think most people read fic in order to be emotionally challenged. I think we read for fun, for excitement (perhaps moreso with people reading "adult" fic), for comfort and for relaxation. The same user makes another comment further down:
...most people don't engage fic for the purpose of being emotionally challenged, especially in a provocative way. A couple of users in the comments disagree with that point. I disagree with it to the extent that I feel like I need to make a new post in order to address my thoughts. This isn't the first time I've heard this sentiment in fandom, and it probably won't be the last.
( Why I like stories to be challenging. ) |

-About me posts: Master post, family, and a picspam of me (all locked).
I just made some new friends through various means, and some of them have been kind enough to do extensive intro posts. After reading these posts, it occurred to me that there's a lot more I could say about myself. I have the general intro that covers most of the basics, but I think I'm going to do a series of posts on a bunch of different topics to get into my life more. -Star Trek art meme.
I haven't done much in the way of drawing for a while. The most I usually do is draw birthday cards for my friends and family (which are surprisingly popular, considering my lack of talent). But I have a DeviantART, and there's a meme for the Star Trek reboot floating around, so I thought I'd give it a go. -Tarot card reading meme.
If you want a Tarot card read, leave a comment with a number 1-10 and with a question. The question can pertain to any of these categories: Romance, home, travel, work/career, emotional state, family, the physical body, finances, friends, anxiety, inheritance, fortune, etc. -The Corbomite Maneuver: The Watch-Along, the latest in my Trek rewatch series, which I'm doing to go along with such_heights's recaps.
I think it's a good measure of how important fiction is to society; fiction fuels imagination, and imagination fuels design and innovation. We'd probably have a lot of this stuff even without fiction, but what would things look like if we didn't have Jules Verne and Star Trek? And would it have taken longer? Edit: Here's a non-digest item: codes! I currently have four invite codes up for grabs, so if anyone needs or wants one, comment or send me a message with an email. |

[Jun. 15th, 2009|06:48 pm] |
I'm working on a meta post at the moment, so this isn't all I'm doing on DW! I swear! (...is anyone even reading this?)
-Blog Like It's The End of the World posts: Late night musings and zombies and baseball.
Usually, I play Tetris Friends until my eyelids are falling closed on their own, but tonight, I was randomly browsing Twitter. A couple people mentioned that they thought the swine flu was mutating, I think. (The tweets were in French, and I'm not very good with it.) There's nothing in the major media, so it sounds like people trying to start crap. I'm not worried. -True Blood 2x01: "Nothing But The Blood" (spoilers).
Besides the whole supernatural element, the main reason I like this show is because we've gotten to know the characters of the town so well, so seeing more of their lives in general should be interesting. -Baseball! (locked)
Walking around the park is one of the best parts of a game. This isn't like a movie or a play, where quiet and stillness is encouraged; there's all kinds of places to see in a ballpark. This stadium has a playground for kids, a grassy area with cheaper tickets, and a Coors Light Party Zone or something (which is just a bunch of benches, but is pretty nifty nonetheless). -In which I am manic (locked).
I looked at the DVDs stacked around the living room while I was putting away the cords and thought, "Hmm, I need to put some of these away." ...I finished by taking every single DVD in the living room off the shelves, grouping them by genre, and putting them back on the shelves according to how much I thought the people in my family would watch them. And there are hundreds of them, too. -A couple of links.
I read a lot online in the course of the day, most of which I forget by the time I finish my daily rounds. One of my favorite sources is cleolinda, who is pretty good about entertainment linkspams. That's also why I don't really share my links; I feel like it's already been done. But that's sort of the point of the Internet: spreading links around, even when other people have posted them. So! Have some links. |

| Digest. |
[Jun. 13th, 2009|12:48 am] |
I think I'm going to quote a little bit of each post with my links. Maybe it'll be a little more interesting that way.
-Two birthday posts.
-In which I start practicing my instruments again.
Here's a question: does anyone know of any good self-instructional guitar sites? My sister gave me an electric/acoustic a little while back, and I love it, but I suck at tuning and I suck even more at chording. -Book roundup 2009: thoughts on books 51-60.
-Ten things you may not know about me (locked).
My laptop is named after Susan Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia, my iPod shuffle is named after Giselle from Enchanted, and my broken iPod Nano is named after Castiel from Supernatural. -In which I try to distract myself because of illness.
The reason I'm up at three in the morning is because I feel a little too blah to sleep. After my impromptu nap, I took cold medicine and blunted the worse of the soreness and nasal explosions, but I still feel...off. You know how it is when you don't have the energy to do anything productive, but you're annoyed enough by being sick that you can't sleep either? That's where I am. -Five more things about me (locked).
It's probably because I went to a lot of weddings over the course of a last year, but I got a lot of questions regarding my romantic life and future plans for a family. I basically said "oh, nothing right now", but the truth of the matter is that I don't really want much. A partner would be nice, but I don't need to be married, and I don't want kids. -Star Trek rewatch notes: "Where No Man Has Gone Before".
I can't get over how young they all look! I may have been raised on the original series, but I watched the movies more than anything, and they were all well into middle-age by that point. And my old-school crush on Leonard Nimoy's coming back. What a babe (even in that ridiculous gold sweater). |

|
| And posts. |
[Jun. 7th, 2009|09:42 pm] |
-Local news: David Eddings passed away (he lived in the same city as me) and my Legislature approved domestic partner benefits.
-Anniversary day (locked). Basically, June 5th was my parents' twenty-seventh wedding anniversary, my eighth anniversary on LJ and for blogging/journaling in general, my fifth anniversary of my high school graduation, and the wedding day for two of my good friends. Crazy, isn't it?
-In which I slept way too much (locked). Between Wednesday and Friday, I slept about twelve hours total. Between yesterday and today, I slept about thirty hours total. I'm not even kidding. |
